History of Railroading
Who doesn't love trains?
The Jackson County Historical & Genealogical Society's Railroad Committee will be displaying their train models and memorabilia at the Jackson George Regional Libraries. The display will begin in May at the Pascagoula Libraryand rotate to a new library each month, giving citizens across the county a chance to see the collection. Please be sure to call the library prior to visiting to confirm the display is ready for viewing.
What will you see?
O-Scale model locomotives and train cars representing steam and diesel era locomotives that operated or still operate in and around Jackson County. Included will be locomotives painted for the Louisville & Nashville (L&N) Railroad and the Mississippi Export Railroad. A model painted for the CSX Railroad which currently operates the former L&N line along the coast of Jackson Co, between Mobile and New Orleans.
A model of the only locomotive that was ever built by Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula. That locomotive was sold to the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio (GM&O) Railroad as their # 1900, about 1946 and it operated mostly around Mobile, AL for about 20 years until it was retired from service about 1967.
One or two models of the types of steam locomotives that operated on the numerous logging railroads in Jackson County in the late 1800's and early 1900's. These little railroad lines were usually narrow gauge railroads that hauled cut trees from the woods to the sawmills. These logging railroads were often called "Dummy Lines."
Railroad memorabilia relating to the RR history of Jackson County, including photographs, old letters, an Ingalls locomotive catalog, and other items of local history. There may even be some other surprises to show up in the displays.
In Lucedale, the mainline RR portion of the display will switch from L&N-related to a GM&O theme, since GM&O operated through Lucedale where L&N was only along the Coast.
